Silymarin, derived from Milk Thistle fruits, is a potent hepatoprotective compound. It enhances liver function by activating RNA polymerase-A, boosting protein synthesis, and supporting the regeneration and repair of liver cells.
Its hepatoprotective effects are mainly attributed to:
Silymarin shields hepatocytes from a variety of liver-damaging agents such as alcohol, toxins, viruses, acetaminophen, environmental pollutants, and metabolic by-products. Its comprehensive action includes antioxidant, antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, membrane-stabilizing, immunomodulatory, and liver-regenerating properties.
Concurrent use with phenothiazines or butyrophenones may reduce lipid peroxidation.
Not to be used by individuals with a known allergy to silymarin.
Generally well tolerated at prescribed doses. In rare cases, it may cause mild laxative effects.
There is limited data on the use of Silymarin (70 mg or 140 mg) during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Therefore, its use should be based on physician guidance and only if necessary.
Store in a cool, dry environment, protected from moisture and light. Keep out of the reach of children.
